Senate Bill 481, sponsored by Senator Judy Ward, passed the state Senate today with a bipartisan vote of 36-14 and now moves to the House for consideration. Pennsylvania Farm Bureau supports this commonsense legislation, which helps protect the state’s dairy supply chain during inclement weather and emergency situations.
The bill allows experienced milk haulers to use their professional judgment to determine when it is safe to transport milk, even during travel restrictions, primarily due to inclement weather. It also establishes a one-time decal system for licensed haulers to reduce red tape while maintaining safety. With milk being a time-sensitive and perishable commodity, this legislation provides much-needed flexibility to dairy farmers and haulers alike, helping ensure continued access to markets and consumers.
We thank the Senate for advancing SB 481 and will continue to advocate for its passage in the House to support Pennsylvania’s dairy industry.
