Pennsylvania Farm Bureau President Chris Hoffman commented today on a White House report issued by the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission.
“The MAHA Commission’s report attempts, in a manner of speaking, to ‘have its cake and eat it too.’ It claims to support farmers and the foundational role they play in our nation’s food system, while at the same time it recycles tired, discredited theories about food safety and farming practices that can only be read as an attempt by the report’s authors to spread doubt in and distrust of the hardworking men and women who produce the safest agricultural goods in the world. Perhaps the report would have offered a more balanced, factual view of modern American agriculture’s role in ensuring a safe and abundant food, fuel and fiber supply for a growing global marketplace if the MAHA Commission had not rejected farmers’ repeated requests to be included in the development of the report.
Pennsylvania farmers are always looking for ways to farm more and farm better. That means relying on federally approved, scientifically sound crop protection tools every day as we produce safe, affordable and abundant food, fuel and fiber, rather than fringe viewpoints of the type underpinning much of the MAHA Commission’s report. Continued access to such tools helps us meet the needs of consumers, who care about ready access to plentiful, nutritious agricultural products. We reaffirm our strong support for science-based solutions that help us keep consumers well-supplied with healthy, affordable options in the marketplace, and we look forward to working with the Trump Administration to ensure that future policy discussions acknowledge the true strength of America’s food system and the role farmers play in making it so.”
