Somerset County Farmer Recognized with Distinguished Local Affairs Leader Award

HERSHEY – Denny Hutchison, a dedicated horse farmer and active member of the Somerset County Farm Bureau, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Local Affairs Leader Award by Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB). Hutchison was recognized during PFB’s 74th Annual Meeting in Hershey on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The Distinguished Local Affairs Leader Award recognizes an outstanding individual, whose local affairs efforts and activities have helped solve problems and improve rural living for county Farm Bureau members.

Hutchison’s journey into farming began more than two decades ago when he and his wife, Lori, pursued their shared love of horses. The couple purchased their Somerset County farm 23 years ago, transforming it into a haven for equine activities and a platform for community engagement.

“People see our farm and think of all the hard work,” Hutchison said. “For us, it’s really good work. We love what we do and the beauty we wake up to every day.”

As a past president and longtime membership chairman of the Somerset County Farm Bureau, Hutchison has been instrumental in raising the profile of Somerset County Farm Bureau. Through partnerships with organizations like the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and local civic groups, he has worked tirelessly to connect with the community and highlight the important contributions of agriculture.

One of Hutchison’s most impactful initiatives addressed the growing concern of mental health challenges in the agricultural community. In collaboration with UPMC and local health professionals, he spearheaded the creation and distribution of the brochure “You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup” in December 2020. The resource provided information about mental health and available support services, reaching over 800 Farm Bureau members and various local businesses frequented by agricultural workers.

Hutchison has been a strong advocate for telling the story of agriculture, ensuring that the public understands the challenges and dedication that farmers face every day.

“Farmers take care of their land, their animals, and their communities,” Hutchison said. “It’s essential to share our stories and make people understand why we do what we do.”

Through his unwavering commitment to advocacy, education, and outreach, Hutchison has left a lasting mark on the Somerset County agricultural community.
